I help students understand the language of mathematics.

Students who do well in math often don’t appreciate the subject because they focus on rote learning of rules. Students who do poorly in math often have trouble remembering these rules. Math should not be taught by rules, though many well-intentioned tutors reinforce this approach.

I guide students to understanding the meaning of mathematics – understanding that leads to better performance, retention, and confidence, and sometimes even to deep love of the subject!

I tutor in math for the following:

• AP Calculus (AB and BC)

• College Calculus

Math concepts build on each other.

Each level of math builds on earlier levels. Students who have not mastered pre-algebra struggle with algebra, and students who have not mastered algebra struggle with calculus. I diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of each student and work to ensure comprehensive knowledge, skill, and mathematical insight. This approach typically raises grades substantially, sometimes from D’s or F’s to A’s.
